Typedesign

Modul

Consider everything an experiment. – Sister Corita Kent

This year, the students approached type design through the method of modular typeface design, guided by the question: Can we still create a new modular typeface?

Modular design is a traditional creative approach that extends beyond type design into various fields such as architecture, product design, software development, and more. Fundamentally, this method is based on the idea of constructing complex systems from individual, independent components that can interact with one another. These components are often designed to be easily replaced, updated, or expanded without affecting the entire system.

The modular method enables quick results but, due to the simplicity of some component sets, also carries the risk of reproducing already existing visual languages. The aim of the course is therefore to generate a previously unseen typeface by employing unusual concepts, new technologies, or newly applied established techniques.
