Bootlegs, Counterfeits and Knock-Offs: From Medieval Artifacts to Digital Culture
Video Lecture 1080px x 1920px, 16min / Books
This work examines different approaches to bootlegging, including imitation, forgery and recontextualisation.
The practice of bootlegging undermines established value systems and codes of meaning and challenges the concept of an original idea. A series of examples is used to analyse the pitfalls and possibilities inherent in bootlegging and provide insights into the challenges involved. As a realisation, a contemporary approach of its own is shown in order to explore the role of bootlegging in digital culture.
