Sous l’émail, Sur la trace des ouvrières & ouvriers des usines de Faïence de Saint-Clément, Lunéville et Coursange [France]
Sous l’émail traces the path of faience objects that my grandmother left behind when she passed away in 2022. On the table lie six plates, stamped with the names and quotations of workers who were employed in the factories of Lunéville, Saint-Clément, and Coursange.
These plates were shaped one by one by hand, based on an 18th-century plate that hung on the dining room wall of my grandmother’s home. The publication presents a series of visual archives that shed light on the memory of these artisans, whose lives remained in the shadow of the enamel’s shine.
Hung on the wall, an interview with Monsieur Ridel—one of the last workers employed at the Saint-Clément factory before its permanent closure in 2022—resonates from within the hollow of a plate.
